Fabricating steel framing products is anything but simple.  Having the right rollforming machine to manufacture steel studs and tracks is the key to your success.  So where do you start?

Where will you fabricate your steel framing products?

There are basically two locations you can manufacture your steel framing products.  First, you can setup a portable machine on the job site and manufacture studs and tracks as you need them.  This method has some initial costs savings.  A portable rollformer is much lower in cost than it’s big brother the industrial model.  You can also manufacture only what you need.  If the framing team requires 12 2″ by 4″ 8 feet long studs then that’s what you make.

Portable roll formers have some drawbacks in their ability to produce enough product such that the per piece cost is lower than buying in bulk.  This is a choice you will have to cost out for your building project.

How do rollformers make steel studs?

A steel stud like those used in office buildings are made with a machine called a rollformer.  This machine ‘rolls’ flat steel sheet in to the shape of a ‘C’ channel or stud.

Importance of Roll Tolling in a Roll Former

The roll tooling are the steel round ‘rolls’ that bend and form the sheet metal in to a specific shape.  As the steel sheet is drawn in to the rolling mill each progressive pass bends the sheet further.  This continuous bending makes the profile shape and is based on various rollforming technologies.

Rollforming Process

The process is called “cold forming” because the steel sheet is cold.  There are similar processes for forming hot sheet metal which as you would guess are called hot forming machines.  In the cold rollformer everything operates at room temperature.  This does not mean that the steel won’t or doesn’t get hot.  Cooling liquid is used at many of the roll tooling stations to keep the material both cold and lubricated for easy forming.
