Solutions for manufacturing steel drywall studs used in steel houses

Rollforming machines used for making steel productsOne of the quickest ways to manufacturing an interior wall is to use steel framing and drywall.  This combination is quick to build and requires little training.  The drywall framing  dimensions are the same as those used in the wooden stick building process and are inherently more flexible.  Scrap material is minimized and recyclable unlike wood products.

Pro’s and con’s of a job site stud rollformer

One of the first things a company that is looking to manufacturer steel building studs is to do so with a portable stud maker.  These machines are small and lightweight my nature and produce a reasonable steel stud.  Here are the basic pros and cons of such a machine.

Portable rollformer pros and cons
Pro Con
Speed Not the faster rollformer on the market
Flexibility Can produce what you need when you need it. Requires many manchine changes to switch over product profiles
Capabilities Low volume Not built for long term high volume product
Cost Less than industrial forming machines Ware and tare at a high rate

Industrial stud and track rollformer

Industrial stud and track machines are capable of roll forming a wide range of profile shapes with minimal interruption.  These machines can switch between stud and track with one push of the button.  Changing flange heights and web widths are also quick and easy.

Industrial roll forming machine: pros and cons
Pro Con
Speed  Very fast Requires high volume production to offset costs
Flexibility Can produce any common stud sizes in one machine
Capabilities High volume production and highly flexible profile output
Cost Expensive compared to other machines Large ROI

Prefabricated building machine

A growing market is the prefab or prefabrication market.  This is where wall production and roofing building is all done inside a factory.  The sections are “prefab’d” and sent off to the job site for assembly.  This method reduces some costs of fabrication and increase overall quality.

Pre-fab roll forming machines: pros and cons
Pro Con
Speed Slow speed
Flexibility Can produce all the components needed to assemble a steel stud drywall or roofing Requires specific architectural drawings for each steel house
Capabilities Low volume
Cost Costs can be at par with other roll forming techniques

What rollforming machine is right for your steel framing application?

Fabricating steel framing products is anything but simple.  Having the right rollforming machine to manufacture steel studs and tracks is the key to your success.  So where do you start?

Where will you fabricate your steel framing products?

There are basically two locations you can manufacture your steel framing products.  First, you can setup a portable machine on the job site and manufacture studs and tracks as you need them.  This method has some initial costs savings.  A portable rollformer is much lower in cost than it’s big brother the industrial model.  You can also manufacture only what you need.  If the framing team requires 12 2″ by 4″ 8 feet long studs then that’s what you make.

Portable steel framing roll formers

Portable roll formers have some drawbacks in their ability to produce enough product such that the per piece cost is lower than buying in bulk.  This is a choice you will have to cost out for your building project.

Industrial grade rollforming machines for steel framing products

The second type of steel framing roll former is the industrial grade machine.  This system is highly flexible and can produce an amazing amount of steel studs and steel tracks.  Buying this type of forming machine brings per unit costs down significantly.  The drawbacks are the cost of a new roll forming machine and the production space needed.  You will require a separate building and warehousing for this setup.

How roll forming can improve the phase-change insulated glass industry

Not often are there new products that come on to the market that have the ability to lean on old technology.  Usually, new technologies imply that there is a completely revolutionary way of creating something.  This is not the case with new glass products for the window industry.

Window frames benefit from advanced rollforming processes

The window frame has been around since the beginning of time, well it seems that way.  You would think we have exhausted everything new in this product sector and are unable to make significant advancements.  This is not the case with phase-change windows and the steel frame.

The function of a phase-change window is to adjust the amount of natural light that passes through the glass.  This has many benefits both from an energy savings point of view as well the ability to work in these environments.  The steel frame surrounding any window frame is extremely important in today’s modern energy efficient systems.

Window frame energy efficiency begins with the roll forming machine

Just like the foundation of a building is critical to the overall integrity of its design the window frame is to the performance of the phase-change window.  The frame, typically a common U-shaped steel sheet formed by a rollformer, holds the glass in place and within the window box.  The junction impacts the stability of the glass as well as it’s energy efficiency.  If the window frame fails under hot or cold weather conditions there is a serious potential for a window failure.

New corrugated steel panel roll forming machines

Corrugated Panel Roll Forming Machine

Corrugated Panel Roll Forming Machine

Designed and engineered to manufacture common sizes of corrugated roofing or siding panels with minimal change-over.  This machine is a workhorse in the steel fabrication industry.  Used all over the world this machine is designed to produce steel panels 24/7.

Corrugated Roll Forming Machine

Corrugated Metal Panels

The most common sizes manufactured are shown below.  This sizes can often all be formed on the same mill.  Simple change out of the roll tooling either by stand or on racks can be done.  This flexibility allows for virtually all sizes to be made.

Common Corrugated Panel Sizes

  • 1.25 inch by .25 inch
  • 2.5 inch by .5 inch
  • 2.67 inch by .75 inch
  • 2.67 inch by 7/8 inch

Rollformer Line Configuration

The standard roll former line configuration includes an uncoiler, flattener, lubrication system, rolling mill and cut-off.  The number of roll tooling stands required for this type of steel profile is 20 to 30 stands or more.  Unlike other profile shapes the bending of steel in to this shape requires both a greater number of rolls and system length.

Optional Equipment

Typical options for a corrugated roll former include the following.

  • Stacker
  • Bundler
  • Multi-head Uncoiler

Companies using roll forming machines for manufacturing steel panels

  • Vicwest
  • Metal Sales
  • Fabral
  • Central States Manufacturing

How do rollformers make steel studs?

A steel stud like those used in office buildings are made with a machine called a rollformer.  This machine ‘rolls’ flat steel sheet in to the shape of a ‘C’ channel or stud.

Importance of Roll Tolling in a Roll Former

The roll tooling are the steel round ‘rolls’ that bend and form the sheet metal in to a specific shape.  As the steel sheet is drawn in to the rolling mill each progressive pass bends the sheet further.  This continuous bending makes the profile shape and is based on various rollforming technologies.

Rollforming Process

The process is called “cold forming” because the steel sheet is cold.  There are similar processes for forming hot sheet metal which as you would guess are called hot forming machines.  In the cold rollformer everything operates at room temperature.  This does not mean that the steel won’t or doesn’t get hot.  Cooling liquid is used at many of the roll tooling stations to keep the material both cold and lubricated for easy forming.

Steel Stud Machine For Drywall Framing

Common steel framing requires high precision studs and track.  The interlocking function requires that every piece conforms to the same exacting tolerances.

Stud and Track Rollformer

With a wide range of sizes stud producers need a rollformer that can adapt automatically to their needs.  The Stud and Track Roll Forming Machine does just that.

Generally these systems are integrated with other industrial software applications to allow for greater efficiency in material usage.
